For my second formal writing I chose the Cosmo website for women. I have been writing about how this website sends messages towards women that may potentially become violent. I am also discussing how this website is extremely heteronormative and causes “othering.” Through the ads and text on the website, young women may be seriously affected by websites such as these. The scary fact of information like this being on a website is that it is even more easily accessible and available to women. Many young women may be visiting websites such as these without a parent knowing. Many phones are currently easily accessible to the internet which is also a factor about this website.
For my third paper, as of now, I am going to continue to use this same website and discuss how it could be changed to bring across more positive messages. I am also going to write about men’s websites that are similar to these and how they are different from women’s. I would also like to write about how I think this website and websites like this one will change in the future and what I think is actually going to happen. I am interested in researching the back ground and history of this website to find out some more about it.
Last Tuesday when we watched the video about the women with the disability of having no legs, I had mixed feelings about the show. I don’t think the show was trying to make fun of this woman. However, I think if the show was geared more towards the medical aspect then it would make the show more credible. I found the show interesting to watch but I think it is geared more towards human interest, instead of education.

  1. Hi Emily,

I'm glad that you are going to stick with the Cosmo Web site for your essay. It's an interesting idea, and has lots that you can discuss.

I like the idea of looking at this site and thinking about how it can be changed to present more positive messages. You can probably find out some information about the site, such as when it was launched, but you might also think of it as an extension of Cosmo the print magazine. As such, you would be able to extend your research to look at the types of articles both online and in print.

One thing you might think about is narrowing your focus a little bit for the site. There's A LOT going on, and you might focus in on just beauty articles, or just dating articles, or maybe both. Concentrating on a few areas, instead of trying to get through everything, will help you be more focused, and will also help you not feel like you need to cover everything.

By the way, I just read an article on there called "10 Dating Truths You Can't Ignore." Check it out - it's pretty interesting, and might be a good one to rewrite:

  2. Hi,

I think this is a good topic to do your final paper on. Since Cosmo is such a widely read magaizne im intrested to see whats in the website that might not be on the magaize.

I think you should also narrow your focus on beauty or dating or whatever you feel is most important to know. I think the website should have a lot of background, you can always see if they have a statement on the website about them. That might give you an insight to what the companys goal is.

You can use Johnsons artical becuase he talks about Cosmo in there. Im intrested to see how you can change the site to give it a more positive image. Maybe like changing it to say "how to be happy in your own skin" or show women in a more strong independent role.

You might want to compare the website and magazine. You can put in your paper the things that are alike and different!
